Objectives and content

The bachelor's programme in human nutrition is a three-year programme comprising 180 ECTS. The programme provides an academic education in the field of nutrition and health. It combines different disciplines such as biochemistry, human physiology, nutritional physiology, food science and nutritional science. The main aim is to provide a scientific basis for taking a master's degree in (clinical) nutrition.

Required Learning Outcomes

The bachelor's programme in human nutrition qualifies graduates for a range of positions in the field of human nutrition, for the master's programmes in clinical nutrition, human nutrition, international health, and other programmes relating to nutrition.

Upon completion of the programme, students are expected to:

- have a theoretical and methodological understanding of nutrition-related disciplines such as human physiology and biochemistry, as well as of methods used in biomedical and nutrition research

- have a scientific understanding of nutrition, including the nutritional physiology of macro and micro-nutrients, energy metabolism, food science, dietary intake assessment, nutritional recommendations and food-based guidelines

- be capable of evaluating scientific information and placing one's own knowledge in the nutrition context. Students should also have the ability to work in teams, and to design and present data either in writing or orally to different audiences.

Admission Requirements

Higher education entrance qualifications or equivalent prior learning and work experience. Applicants must also meet science subject requirements (MEROD requirements): mathematics R1 (or mathematics S1 and S2), physics 1 and chemistry 1 and 2.There is also a demand for proficiency in Norwegian.

Admission to the Bachelor programme in human nutrition is coordinated through The Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS). Look at NUCAS web site for information on how to apply and about Norwegian and English language requirements. All the programs that go through NUCAS require that the applicant have a permanent/renewable residence permit in Norway.

Access to further studies

The program provides a basis for admission to the Master programs in Clinical Nutrition, Human Nutrition and Aquatic Nutrition.

Employability

A bachelor in Human Nutrition provides a good platform to pursue further nutritional studies. If you continue in the Master's program in Clinical Nutrition, you will be able to seek authorization as a health care worker and work as a clinical nutritionist within the health authorities. If you choose human or aquatic studies you qualify for work in research, in marine production and in the food industry. You may also seek occupation within private businesses, offices of information and sports centres that communicate lifestyle and dietary information.
