Objective:

Introduction into nuclear physics, ionizing radiation and its applications

Content:

Introduction into nuclear physics, radioactivty, properties of ionizing radiation, interaction of radiation with matter, dosimetry, biological effects, medical and technical applications, radiation environment, radiation detection

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The students should be able to understand

• basic concepts in nuclear physics
• properties of ionizing radiation
• their applications
• methods of radiation detection

Skills

The students should

• have the capability of doing back-of-the-envelope calculations in a diversity of situations

General competence

• critical thinking
• be able to uncover "alternative facts" in public discussions
