Goal:

In this course, emphasis is placed on the student being able to integrate knowledge and skills from all subjects that have been reviewed up to the end of the 4th year of study. Based on previously acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes, the student can examine and treat the most common conditions in the oral cavity. The student must see the various subjects as a whole and be able to prioritize and propose a treatment sequence based on the patient's needs. In particularly, the student should take the responsibility to follow up the patient in a responsible and professional manner. 

Contents:

Since this course is based on elements that have been introduced earlier in the curriculum, reference is made both to the overall theoretical and practical/clinical learning objectives, and to the learning outcomes at the different clinical  departments. The training will be a continuation of the initial training that has been performed up to the the eight semester. The clinic should be passed in order to start the 10th semester.

After completing the course, the student has the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student:

• has in-depth knowledge of symptoms, clinical findings, treatment planning and treatment of the most common oral problems
• has knowledge of supplemental examinations, for example CT, MRI and laboratory tests 
• have knowledge of how illness in the body can affect oral health
• have knowledge of the main groups of drugs and their mechanisms of action and how these can affect oral disease and the choice of therapy
• has knowledge of the special needs of elderly and hospitalized patients
• has knowledge of clinical use, biological aspects and handling of dental biomaterials
• has knowledge of microbiology, which is important for dental and oral health
• is familiar with socal security regulations for reimbursement of expenses for dental treatment
• has knowledge about the Norwegian Dental Health Service Act

Skills:

The student should:

• independently record anamnesis and write good and structured patient records for all patient groups
• performs simple diagnostic examinations
• be able to assess the need for and to take intraoral radiographs
• be able to consider the need for additional investigations
• carry out basic prophylactic and therapeutic measures for the patient in an independent manner
• masters various forms of emergency treatment and handles acute situations that may occur during dental treatment
• be able to assess the need for further referral/hospitalization
• be able to use the most common modern, scientifically accepted prophylactic and therapeutic measures, materials and techniques
• be able to evaluate the completed treatment and to provide an objective prognostic assessment
• be able to assess the need for follow-up after finished treatment and to plan the maintenance phase
• be able to ensure that the patient is entitled reimbursement/benefit from public or private finances                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      General competence:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The student should:
• collaborate with dental hygienists, dental secretaries and other health personnel
• demonstrate ethical and professional behavior towards patients, relatives and colleagues
• acknowledge his/her own professional boundaries and refer the patient when necessary 
• act in line with legislation, procedures and ethical guidelines

The clinical training in the course is mandatory.

The training consists of all clinical instructions within the following clinical disciplines: endodontics, cariology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral surgery and oral medicine, pedodontics, periodontology and prosthodontics according to the patients' needs and where an interdisciplinary approach is necessary. The training in all the clinical disciplines has to be approved before the final evaluation of the student in the course. The various trainings constitutes a whole and must reflect the knowledge, skills and general competence the student has aquired during this level of the study, both from the pre-, para- and clinical courses.
