Objectives:

The instruction gives the student an understanding of diseases, pain, deformities and injuries in the oromaxillofacial area.

Content:

The 7th semester is an introduction to the following topics:

• Patient evaluation and record keeping
• Tissue reactions
• Examination techniques and biopsies
• Hygiene and surgery

The 8th semester will provide knowledge about:

• tissue reactions in oral surgery and diseases and conditions in oral medicine.
• acute and chronic inflammations, infectious spread and current forms of treatment of these processes.
• special immunopathological reactions in the oral cavity and jaws
• the importance of the oral cavity in general medical conditions
• retained teeth
• surgical removal of teeth
• surgical treatment with oral implants
• surgical indications/ contraindications and complications of implant-based prosthetics

Knowledge:

The student:

• acquires sufficient theoretical knowledge to be able to carry out a practical/clinical examination and radiological assessment.
• has sufficient knowledge in oral pathology to be able to understand a histological description.
• is able to interpret answers to a microbiological examination that is part of patient treatment.
• learns to understand their own professional boundaries and is able to refer the patient to a specialist to ensure the best possible treatment.

Skills:

The student:

• diagnoses inflammations in oral tissue.
• performs tooth extractions.
• sutures after oral surgery.
• diagnoses and treats complications from tooth extractions and minor surgical interventions.
• diagnoses nerve damage as a result of complicated tooth extractions or jaw surgery.
• performs basic CPR (mouth-to-mouth and heart compressions).
• diagnoses damage to teeth and jaws.
• performs first aid for fractures of teeth and jaws and diagnoses ENT conditions such as sinusitis and otitis.
• diagnoses and treats allergic reactions.

General competence:

The student has ethical attitudes so that, as a qualified dentist, he/she will take care of and show care for their patients as required by the health authorities and as the patients expect.

The teaching format is interdisciplinary, integrated and case- and problem-oriented. Teaching is given in the form of seminars with one or more scientific teachers/clinical specialists present, where an interdisciplinary discussion is planned to activate the students. The class is divided into 4 groups, and each group is assigned one or more thematic assignments in each topic. The tasks usually include both clinical description and follow-up with relevant examinations (X-ray, microscopic image of biopsy, microbiology). Based on this information, the students must make a diagnosis and propose treatment. At the end of a topic, each group presents an assignment answer in plenary in which the rest of the class and the subject teachers have the opportunity to comment on the presentation. The group's final answer will be based on the plenary discussion and feedback from the subject teachers.

There will be a number of clinical courses, in addition to practice in the clinic and operating theater.

Seminars, group work, clinical sessions, integrated semester test and clinical attendance at Haukeland University Hospital. Maximum absence of 2 clinical sessions.

During the spring semester, the student has to submit a minimum of 4 group tasks that have to be approved through oral evaluations. These must all be evaluated as "approved" before one can take the written semster test.

All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed.¿In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.
