Objectives and Content

The subject OD3PERIO is the study of the structures that surround the teeth and attach them to the jaws. It is also the study of causes, development and treatment of diseases in these structures. One of the objectives of the subject is to learn about the associations between periodontal and systemic diseases. The two most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis (gum inflammation) and marginal periodontitis (tooth attachment disorder). The subject teaches the student that the incidence of these diseases in the adult population is significant. In the majority of the population, the disease can be treated, but about 10% develop a more severe form that often leads to tooth loss. The subject is communicating that periodontitis is initiated by accumulation of bacteria (biofilm) on tooth surfaces that triggers the immune system. In combination with hereditary and environmental factors, a destructive process of the periodontium develops. The number of patients receiving dental implants to replace missing teeth is increasing. During the course, the student learns that diseases can occur in the supporting tissue around dental implants, that the pathological factors are considered the same as for gingivitis and periodontitis and that diseases in the supporting tissues surrounding dental implants require extensive treatment.
