Knowledge

After completion of the course, the student knows:

• concepts and terminology relating to dental biomaterials
• the structure, composition, reaction methods and properties of relevant groups of biomaterials; permanent and temporary dental restorative materials for direct and indirect techniques
• the use of materials that are used in connection with the manufacture of restorations or other structures used to treat or prevent loss of function
• methods of preparation of restorative materials and the production of structures
• materials and methods for the manufacture of indirect dental restorations
• materials used for special purposes, such as in endodontics, orthodontics and surgery
• regulatory/legislative matters that affect the selection and use of biomaterials
• potential biological and clinical effects, interactions between materials and the body, including relevant toxicological issues

Skills

After completion of the course the student can:

• make a rational selection of material based on information from manufacturers and from manufacturer independent sources
• apply relevant biomaterials in dental general practice
• search, retrieve and scientifically evaluate information from manufacturers and suppliers
• communicate with dental technicians, and understand the processes involved
• assess any adverse reactions to materials

General competence

After completion of the course the student can:

• demonstrate a general understanding of the consequences of the use of artificial materials in humans
• critically assess the commercial pressure with respect to materials and techniques
• pass on biomaterial-related issues to patients, other health professionals and the general public

Perform a small material science project and present the results

All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed.¿In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice¿.
