The course MED5 has three main objectives:

• The student should acquire fundamental knowledge of the paraclinical disciplines of pathology and radiology
• The student should acquire sound, fundamental clinical skills with regards to medical history, clinical examination and writing of medical records (propedeutics)
• The student will be introduced to a broad spectrum of clinical fields through a "Clincal Foundation Class", which starts in MED5 and continues into MED6. In addition, there will be a special focus on the topics of circulation and respiration, with more emphasis in teaching on pathophysiology, case management, diagnostics and treatment of a wide number of different illnesses, and that the student is able to perform adequate examinations and treatments individually.

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, the student has broad knowledge regarding:

• cellular pathology: cell damage, cell death and cellular adaptation to stress
• general processes of illness: inflammation and immunopathology, circulatory disturbances on a general level, and tumors/cancer
• etiology, pathogenesis and pathological-anatomical findings in illnesses in the heart/vascular system, airways/lungs, female genitalia, bone and soft tissues, digestive organs, lymph nodes and bone marrow
• fundamental principles and adequate and cost-efficient use of diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasound, CT, MR and nuclear medicine)
• the most common image-guided intervention procedures / treatments
• pathophysiology, diagnostics and treatment of common heart conditions
• use/benefit/interpretation of cardiological examination methods
• the theoretical principles of primary and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation when facing cardiac arrest
• epidemiological risk factors for heart disease and principles for primary and secondary preventive measures for heart disease
• pathology, investigation and treatment of respiratory tract infections, lung cancer, pleural disease and interstitial lung disease
• diagnosing acid-base disruptions and respiratory failure based on arterial blood gas analysis
• practical treatment of pleural fluid and pneumothorax

Skills

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

• recognize macroscopic and microscopic changes from illnesses in general, and in organ systems, and possess insight into diagnostic use and relevance of these changes
• depict imagery findings of the most common illnesses one encounters as a newly educated doctor
• perform bedside ultrasound
• master general examination technique, including measuring of blood pressure and pulse, and examination of the lungs, heart, abdomen and lymph nodes
• perform and interpret EKG independently, as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation in case of cardiac arrest
• initiate treatment in patients with acute heart disease and initiate and follow up on anticoagulatory treatment
• perform and interpret spirometry
• basic skills in collecting and interpreting arterial blood gas specimens / acid-base, assessing thoracic x-ray

General competence

Upon completion of the course, the student:

• possesses insight into the organization of the health service, has the ability of cross-disciplinary medical thinking and can develop sound, cooperative relations to other professions and and cooperation between primary and specialized health services.
• possesses insight into, and is able to develop, attitudes that facilitates contact, safety and trust in the doctor-patient relationship
• demonstrates balance between humane understanding and respect and the ability to handle patients in a medical sound manner when the patient's lifestyle is a direct or contributing cause of illness

Teaching is given through lectures, patient demonstrations, TBL, group teaching with practice in examination technique and examination of patients. The course assumes a high degree of activity with respect to students practicing examination technique on each other.

• Attendance in the mentor programme is mandatory in this semester. Minimum attendance is 75% per year.

Regarding the written test:

For the written test, two continuation tests will be arranged as soon as practically possible for students without a valid result. Students who have not achieved valid results on the test after three attempts, will be moved to a lower class. If the student does not achieve a valid result after three attempts, it will be counted as one assessment attempt in the subject pursuant to UiB¿s study regulations § 8-1 (1). Due to the short time between the regular test and the continuation tests, it will not be possible to process appeals on grading before the third attempt is completed. The semester board may decide if the third attempt should be in a different format than the previous two. If the third attempt is conducted as an oral test, it cannot be appealed pursuant to The University and University Colleges Act § 5-3 (5).
