Name of qualification

The master¿s programme leads to the degree Master of Science in Physics. It is a two year programme

(120 ECTS credits).

Objectives and content

The Master's programme in Physics is offered in both pure and applied physics. The programme is aimed at students with interest in physics and related fields, who intend to qualify for research, development or teaching and who seek employment where education in physics is required or considered an advantage. Admission Requirements

Who may apply?

You need a bachelor's degree in Physics with a duration of three or four years from an approved institution of higher education.

Non-native English speakers must document their English language proficiency in order to be considered for admission. 

 

For international self-financing applicants:

The Master's Degree Programme in Physics is not available for international applicants residing abroad.

Objectives / Contents

The Masters degree in physics is offered in both pure and applied physics. The programme is aimed at students with interest in physics and related fields, who intend to qualify for research, development or teaching and seek employment where education in physics is required or considered an advantage. Within the master program in physics the candidates can choose among the following specializations:

- Theoretical physics and energy physics

- Nuclear physics

- Particle physics

- Optics and atomic physics

- Space physics

- Measurement science

- Microelectronics

- Underwater acoustics

Admission requirements

A first degree (bachelor´s degree) of three or four years´ duration from an approved institution of higher education, as well as proficiency in the English language.

Prerequisites

Education corresponding to a norwegian Bachelor degree in physics, or equivalent.

Method

In the work with the master´s thesis you will, in an independent way, make use of methods and scientific working techniques from the subject field in the research of a relevant material. Analyses of observation data and data from models are very important in addition to theoretical and experimental studies.

Thesis

In agreement with your academic supervisor, you will choose a master´s thesis (60 ECTS credits) and make a progression plan containing important milestones for your project. At this programme it is possible to have a 30 study point thesis, extending the course part of the programme to 90 study points.

Programme structure

A master´s programme in physics consists of an individual research project (master´s thesis) of 60 ECTS credits, and courses or special topics of 60 ECTS credits. Some of the courses are compulsory within the specialisations. You will choose the other courses in agreement with your academic supervisor.
