Objectives and Content
The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology qualifying the student for further studies in pharmacy or nutrition. Students will also gain insight into experimental molecular biology and are given an overview of biotechnological methodology.
Learning Outcomes
After the course the students will have the following learning outcome defined as knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge: The students..
- Have broad knowledge of basic structures, properties and the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids
- Have broad knowledge of DNA replication, DNA repair, transcription of RNA, RNA splicing and processing, and mRNA translation
- Have broad knowledge of the principles for signal translation and gene regulation, and can explain chosen examples in detail
- Have broad knowledge of the energy metabolism in cells
- Know the principles of methods for protein purification and protein analysis
- Know chosen experimental methods in biochemistry, molecular biology and biomedicine
Skills: The students..
- Can apply scientific knowledge to solve biomedical problems within the topics taught
- Can perform chosen laboratory analyses and experimental analyses, and interpret the results
General competencies: The students..
- Have insight in biochemical questions relevant for nutrition and pharmacy
- Can plan and perform theoretical group work and practical laboratory exercises together with fellow students
- Know the relevant safety rules when performing practical work

Beginner course for first year students attending Bachelor programme in nutrition as well as second year students attending Master Programme in Pharmac

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, Student-active lectures, Laboratory courses, Data course and Colloquias.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Participation in the health and safety introduction and the computational and laboratory exercises are mandatory. Laboratory procedures must be executed in a satisfactory manner. Laboratory journals have to be approved before students can take the final exam. The students are encouraged to attend lectures and colloquium groups.
Forms of Assessment
4 hour digitalized written exam.
