Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to fish histology, both in normal and diseased fish, with an emphasis on Norwegian farmed fish. The course is divided into two parts, where the first part deals with the normal (non-pathological) histology. Here, the morphology and structure of all tissue types and important organs will be reviewed. In the second part we will give an introduction to how damaged tissue and pathological changes look microscopic. We will first give an introduction to general histopathology and lesions in various organs of fish. Then we will go through what this specifically looks like in some current diseases in farmed fish, with the main emphasis on Norwegian conditions.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, students should be able to identify all tissue types, and must be able to recognize all important organs and describe its structure based on microscopic sections in normal fish. In the pathology part, the student must be able to describe general histopathological changes and be able to give an histopathologically based diagnosis for current diseases. The student must be able to distinguish between the histology of healthy and diseased tissue, as well as between tissue damage that occurs due to disease, and which results from poor preparation (artifacts).
