Objectives
The study program will give theoretical understanding and practical skills in the natural sciences that give the scientific platform for nanotechnology. Further, the study program will give introduction to the unique features of nanoscience and nanotechnology through examples and work in modern laboratories. The student will also meet ethical and social issues connected to technology.
Content:
Technological innovations have made it possible to measure and systematically alter structures and processes that occur on the scale from 0.1 to 100 nanometer. This opens for completely new properties often determined by the laws of quantum mechanics. While nanoscience focuses on how to obtain wanted properties through manipulation on the nanometer scale, nanotechnology focuses on practical utilization of materials, structures and components based in nanoscience.
The bachelor¿s programme in Nanotechnology gives a broad background in the natural sciences through mathematics, physics and chemistry. In addition, a thorough introduction to the field of molecular biology may be elected.
In the NANO-courses, exclusive for the program, the nanotechnology is put into a broad perspective. Nanotechnological instrumentation is demonstrated to and used by the students. Nanomaterials are synthesized and characterized. The students are also introduced to the the nanotechnology and nanoscience research that find place in several research groups around different departments and faculties. Towards the end of the programme the students may carry out an individual research project within the field of nanotechnology, supervised by experienced researchers.
On completion of the programme the candidate should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge

5. semester: NANO244, elective (KJEM124), elective (MOL200/KJEM243/EXPHIL)
6. semester: NANO299, KJEM291, EXPHIL/elective
*) MAT121 is recommended prior knowledge both for KJEM221 and PHYS201
The following courses are recommended electives in the programme:
KJEM130, KJEM140, MOL100, BIO103, PHYS118, NANO299
The students may choose other courses.
The recommended sequence of the courses in the programme can be found under the
heading "Specialization".
The programme committee has made adaption for students who want to take parts of the
study abroad.
In particular the fifth semester is suited for exhcange studies.
The most common assessment methods are written and in some cases oral examination.
The assessment methods for each course are described in the course description.
At UiB the grades are given in one of two possible grading scales, passed/failed and A to F.
The grading scale for each course is given in the course description.
With a Bachelor¿s degree in Nanotechnology you can work with the following areas:
Research, technological industry, teaching and public management and administration. You can also continue to a Master¿s study in Nanoscience. If you finish your study after the completion of the Bachelor¿s degree in nanotechnology your multidisciplinary platform in the natural sciences will be your most prominent competitive advantage.
